Add a mobile number to a contact
Contacts that arrived without a phone number — from Instagram, email or a web form — can now be given a WhatsApp number right from the contact page. If the number already belongs to someone else, we point you to a merge instead of quietly making a duplicate.
Released 17 July 2026
A contact that came in without a phone number can now be given one — so an Instagram or email contact becomes reachable on WhatsApp without starting over.
What's new
- Add a number from the contact page — open a contact that has no number, click Edit contact, and a Mobile number field appears. Once a contact has a number it stays fixed (it's how WhatsApp routes to them).
- The same tidy phone input everywhere — every mobile field on the platform now uses one international input: pick the country from the flag list and type the number, stored in a single consistent format.
- No accidental duplicates — if the number you add already belongs to another contact, we tell you whose it is and point you to a merge, rather than creating a second record for the same person.
