Instagram comments now match your existing contacts
Commenters and mentions no longer create duplicate contacts — they attach to your existing Instagram contact by their @username, and merging offers separate choices for the Instagram ID and username.
A customer who DMs you and then comments on a post is one person — now they're one contact too.
What's new
- No more duplicate contacts from comments — Instagram gives the same person a different ID on DMs versus comments and mentions, which used to split them into two contacts. Now, when a commenter's @username matches exactly one of your recently active Instagram contacts, the comment attaches to that contact.
- No guessing — if two of your contacts share an @username, or the only match hasn't been active in over a year (handles change hands), the comment creates a separate contact rather than attaching to the wrong person. You can merge deliberately whenever you're sure.
- Finer merge choices — the merge screen now offers separate pickers for the Instagram ID and the Instagram username, so you can keep one side's identity with the other side's handle.
